Awarded to incoming Bachelor of Music applicants who demonstrate excellent potential during their audition process, this scholarship is worth between $1000 and up to $10 000.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be a domestic or international student commencing a Bachelor of Music

Selection criteria

Eligible candidates are selected on the basis of their Bachelor of Music application and audition.

Application process

Eligible students who have applied for admission to the Bachelor of Music and have auditioned will be automatically considered.

Bachelor of Music (Music Studies)

Course overview

  • 6 years part time / 3 years full time
  • Honours available
  • On Campus (Southbank)
  • Available to domestic and international students
  • Start Year Intake – February

The Bachelor of Music program is a three-year, full-time degree that offers pre-professional music training. The 300-point program is made up of:

  • 12.5 point compulsory Level 1 discovery subject: Musical Perspectives
  • 225 points of a prescribed music major
  • 50 points of breadth
  • including at least 12.5 points at Level 2 or 3
  • 12.5 points of either elective or breadth

The Bachelor of Music program offers advanced instruction in a wide range of musical fields. Jazz & Improvisation, Musicology & Ethnomusicology, Music Studies, or Performance are the majors available to students.

The program develops technically advanced and experienced musicians through an immersive and practical curriculum with music core studies, music electives and complementary breadth subjects.

The Music Studies major is the most flexible pathway within the Bachelor of Music. If your interests extend beyond a particular focus of performance, composition or scholarship, this program equips you with portable, practical and collaborative skills applicable to a range of music-related careers, while allowing you to pursue your individual interests.

You will:

  • Develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the practical, theoretical and conceptual aspects of music
  • Broaden their musical knowledge across a range of styles and repertoire
  • Develop advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving through regular practical activities and theoretical studies
  • Participate in performance and academic activities
  • Have opportunities for solo and ensemble performances
  • Have access to a wide range of invaluable career experiences at a local or international context.
  • Future pathways
  • Upon completion of the course, you may choose to apply for a fourth-year Honours degree. An honours year provides an intensive mode of study allowing you to master your knowledge and create a pathway into advanced graduate study options in music.

Course Progression Rules

Students must have completed the compulsory subject Musical Perspectives before taking Level 2 core subjects.

Students must have completed all Level 1 core subjects before taking Level 3 core subjects.

Note: Core subjects in this program have prerequisites. Refer to individual subject entries.

Majors

Students apply for and enrol in one of six majors:

Composition

  • Interactive Composition
  • Jazz & Improvisation
  • Musicology & Ethnomusicology
  • Music Studies
  • Performance
  • Students may apply to transfer between Performance, Composition, Musicology & Ethnomusicology, and Music Studies, subject to meeting entry requirements for the major.

The Music Studies Major is the most flexible pathway within the Bachelor of Music and so offers more career paths than you can imagine. Whichever major you choose to pursue in the Bachelor of Music, you will enjoy a wide range of employment options in a range of different industries.   • Arts administration
  • Music journalism
  • Project management
  • Running orchestras and other major ensemble groups
  • With further study, you could also pursue careers in music teaching, music psychology, music therapy and as a music librarian.
