ATTACHMENTS AND SUPPORT DOCUMENTS
You may need to upload/submit attachments to support your application. This is very simple, but requires you to have the documents saved on your computer, or on a storage device.
You need to allow enough time for each file to upload before trying to attach another file. Files can be up to 25MB each; however, we do recommend trying to keep files to a maximum of 5MB – the larger the file, the longer the upload time.
COMPLETING AN APPLICATION IN A GROUP OR AS A TEAM
A number of people can work on an application using the same log in details as long as only one person is working at a time. Ensure you save as you go.
SPELL CHECK
Most internet browsers (including Firefox v2.0 and above; Safari; and Google Chrome) have spell checking facilities built in – you can switch this function on or off by adjusting your browser settings.
MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE AWARD
Drummond Award Background
A. Mrs Margaret Drummond of 68 Mont Albert Road, Canterbury, in the State of Victoria, donated the sum of $40,000 to the University to establish a prize and a travel award in memory of her late husband, Frank Harvey Drummond.
B. Dr Drummond was a member of the University’s department of Zoology from 1931 until his retirement in 1974, after which he remained an active associate of the department until his death in February, 1987.
It is provided as follows:
1. The sum of $40,000 and any accumulations and additions to the sum forms a fund called the ‘F.H. Drummond Prize and F.H. Drummond Travel Award’ (‘fund’), and the fund must be paid into one or more investment common funds and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
2.
- From the net annual income of the fund, the ‘F H Drummond Prize’ (‘prize’) must be awarded each year to the most outstanding student in the discipline of zoology who is completing either the honours year in a bachelor of Science degree, a research training program in the master of Science degree or an advanced graduate diploma in Science. The prize is awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science (‘Dean’), who must first consult with the head of the academic unit within the Faculty of Science responsible for the discipline of zoology (‘head’).
- The prize, for its first award in 1990, is valued at $250. In subsequent years the value of the prize may be increased by the Dean so that it continues to maintain its relative value.
3.
- From the net income of the fund, the ‘F.H. Drummond Travel Award’ (‘travel award’) must be made by the Dean at such intervals as he or she may determine on the recommendation of the head.
- The value of the travel award is to be determined by the Dean on the recommendation of the head, and will normally not exceed the cost of the most economical single or return airfare to the overseas university or other academic institution which the scholar proposes to attend, together with reasonable accommodation costs, and the cost of conference registration or course enrolment. Return airfares will be available to graduate students only to enable them to attend short courses or conferences during the candidature of their graduate courses.
- The tenure of the travel award, where it involves a return airfare, must be determined by the Dean on each occasion of its award. Each such determination must be based on the recommendation which, in turn, must 2 set a reasonable time limit on the scholar’s proposed attendance at a short course or conference.
- In any year, in considering whether to accept a recommendation that the travel award be offered, the Dean must have regard to the effects of inflation on the fund and must take into account the need to ensure the future viability of the fund.
- In any year the Dean may direct that, after allowing for the award of the prize, the remaining income of the fund for that year be added to the capital of the fund either to increase the capital sum or to enable a greater accumulation of income to be available as income for the making of the travel award in a subsequent year.
- In any year the Dean may direct that more than one travel award be offered.
4.
- The travel award, when available, is open to postgraduate and postdoctoral students in the discipline of zoology to enable them to undertake study or research at an overseas university or other academic institution approved by the Dean.
5.
- Applications for the travel award are to be invited by notices placed on University and faculty notice-boards and by such other means as the Dean and the head determine are appropriate.
- Candidates for the travel award are required to submit a statement setting out the program of study or research they propose to undertake, a report from their supervisor, and written academic advice that, if they are granted the travel award, the overseas university or other academic institution will accept their visit. The Dean and the head may also require candidates to attend an interview at which an oral presentation must be given by each candidate.
6.
- Each recipient of the travel award must submit to the head, before the expiration of three months from the date of departure overseas, a written report detailing the progress of his or her study or research.
7.
If at any time, and for whatever reason, it becomes impracticable or impossible to continue to award either the prize or the travel award or both, on the above terms and conditions, or for the above purposes-
- Council may apply all or part of the income of the fund for such other purposes as Council, on the recommendation of the Dean, determines accord with the intentions of the donor; and
- Council may, where necessary, apply all or part of the capital of the fund for such other purposes as Council, on the recommendation of the Dean, determines accord with the intentions of the donor.
8.
As provided in section 43 of the University of Melbourne Act 2009, Council has delegated to the Dean its powers and duties set out in section 7(1), which are to be exercised on the recommendation of the head.
